The Lathe Story

    There was a wood carver in Silver Dollar City who carved chair legs for a living. He carved the most beautiful chair legs around. One day his boss brought a lathe into the shop, a machine that spins the wood while you carve. The boss put a long piece of wood in the lathe and turned on the lathe. Then he said to the carver, "All my competitor's carvers are using lathes, and making chair legs much faster and cheaper. I cannot compete. Unless you learn to carve on a lathe, you cannot have a job". The carver was very depressed. He sat there with his head in his hands, not knowing what to do.
    Then a man came into the shop who knew how to work a lathe.   He saw how sad the carver was and asked what was wrong. The carver told him about the lathe. "The wood is spinning so fast, I cannot see the grain to carve it. If I don't use the lathe, I will lose my job. I don't know what to do."
    The visitor said, "That's easy. You need the right story. You are using a knife story to carve on a lathe. What you need is a lathe story. Put down your knife. Now pick up the lathe tool. There are only two things you can do with the lathe tool, move it in and out, or back and forth, but using those two motions you can carve all the most beautiful curves and swirls your art can imagine."
    The carver tried it, and found he could do it, just as the man had said. Soon he was carving the most beautiful chair legs in Silver Dollar City, and he received a raise in pay. When rapid change came to Silver Dollar City, what was the difference between losing his job and getting a raise in pay? He had the right story - a lathe story.

A knowledge civilization is a self sustaining community in space of billions of creators and consumers and their machines that produces a continuous blossoming of new existence at ever higher levels of organization. It is a blossoming Flower of the Universe. This is a way the universe, with this new stage in the process of evolution, produces higher level existence, through the Flowers of the Universe.

Reproduction: A Knowledge Civilization Reproduces Many More Flowers Of The Universe

A knowledge civilization reproduces by dividing itself, as in biological cell division. It builds a platform in space, transfers billions of individuals and their machines to it, and finally transfers to it a copy of its knowledge base. The new knowledge civilization is a new blossoming Flower, creating its own new, high level existence, which moves off into space, and eventually reproduces many more Flowers. These Knowledge Civilizations will cover the galaxy in 50 million years and the universe eventually. These Flowers of the Universe, each producing a continuous blossoming of new existence, will make the universe a garden blossoming with new existence in full bloom.

The knowledge civilization is characterized by necessary global peace; the mass creativity of billions of creators and consumers contributing to the global knowledge base; robust variety in people around the world, which enriches the global economy by which we live; individual freedom and responsibility; and horizontally organized partnership culture. The powerful global knowledge economy, which sweeps all before it, needs these conditions to thrive. The marketplace moves people and the global culture in these directions. Mass creativity by billions of individuals around the world is necessary to provide for the billions of consumers around the world, all connected together by the machines of the knowledge economy. The need for mass creativity rather than mass obedience from the people to sustain the global knowledge economy drives the changes in the global culture. Control by government and business is replaced by nurture of the creators and consumers. The global knowledge economy needs the creativity of both men and women. Men and women have equal status in marriage, in the knowledge economy and in the knowledge civilization. This is what it takes to have a successful global knowledge economy, from which all, directly or indirectly, receive their sustenance, and to have a successful, healthy, reproducing knowledge civilization on Earth - The First Flower of the Universe.
